Switching Marina Software Without the Dread: What Onboarding Actually Looks Like
The most common thing we hear is not whether the software does a particular job. It is a quieter worry: this looks great, but how on earth do we move everything across from what we already have? An honest walk through switching to Moored: migrating your data, setting the system up yourself with as much or as little help as you want, and going at a pace that never puts the season at risk.
After a demo, the questions we get are rarely about whether the software can do the job. People can see that it can. The question that actually decides things is quieter and comes near the end: this looks great, but how do we move everything across from what we already run? What happens to our customer list, our seasonal berth holders, the twenty years of history sitting in a spreadsheet, the way our pontoons are laid out?
It is a fair worry, and it is usually the real reason a marina stays on a system it has outgrown. Switching feels like a cliff edge, and a marina in season cannot afford a cliff edge. So I want to be straight about how the move actually works, because the reality is a good deal calmer than the fear.
Nobody asks you to jump
The first thing worth saying is that there is no forced switchover date where the old way stops and the new way starts, ready or not. You can keep running things exactly as you do now and bring parts of Moored in as you get comfortable, adding more self-serve options for customers as their expectations grow.
That matters because it takes the risk out of the decision. You are not betting the summer on everything working perfectly from day one. You are moving at a pace you set, with the old approach still there underneath until you no longer need it.
Bringing your history with you
The spreadsheet full of customers and the years of booking history are not something you leave behind. During setup, Moored migrates your existing data across, whether that currently lives in spreadsheets or in another system: your customer database, your historical bookings and your mooring information.
So the account you log into on the first day is not an empty shell waiting for you to type everything back in. Your berth holders are there. Your history is there. The people who have moored with you for a decade are recognised as exactly that, rather than starting again as strangers.
What the move actually looks like
Here is how it tends to go in practice, rather than in theory.
The first thing we do is give you an account with your own data already loaded onto it. Not a blank demo, and not the live system either. Your customers, your bookings and your moorings are in front of you, but none of it is switched on to the public yet. That means you can log in, read through the guides and the help docs, and explore the whole system in your own context, with no pressure of it being live and no customers relying on it. You get used to how it works and see what is ready before any of it matters to a single boater.
There is no setup fee to clear first and no barrier to entry to get past. You can get in and have a proper play with it, against your own data, and see how it feels for your site. Worst case, you look at a few things, decide it is not for you, and back out having lost nothing.
When you are happy and you decide you are ready, we turn it on so it is live to your users. Even then, you expose it in your own order. You might make your waitlist active first. Then your services. If it suits your site, you switch on online bookings. When you get to pay-on-arrival, going live can be as simple as putting the signs up at the berths. Each piece goes live when you want it to, and not before. That gradual freedom is the whole point of it, and it is entirely yours.
None of this runs to our clock, either. If you find us today and want to get started tomorrow, you can. We send you an email to confirm you are who you say you are, we talk you through the system and hand over your account, and you are away.
You are not doing this on your own
Every part of the system, right down to laying out your marina map, is something you can set up yourself. In practice we usually put a few pieces in place first to help you get going. Either way, the part that matters most in all of this is that we do not hand you a login and disappear. We help you get your data across, so you are not migrating twenty years of history by yourself. We talk you through the system rather than leaving you to work it out from scratch. And once you are up and running, we stay at the end of the line: any question, at any point, we are here to help and to check that things are going well. Onboarding is not a handover followed by silence. It is the start of us being around whenever you need us.
Going live without a bad day
Put those pieces together and the switch stops looking like a cliff edge. Your data comes across during setup. The system gets set up at your pace, with as much help from us as you want. The old way stays available while you find your feet. There is no single morning where everything has to work at once or the season falls over.
The marinas that put off changing systems for years almost always find the move itself was the smaller part. The harder thing was deciding to start.
If the switch is the only thing standing between you and a system you actually want, that is worth a proper conversation. Get in touch and we will walk through it against your own site, your own data and your own layout, or book a demo to see how it fits together first.
Moored Solutions is marina and harbour management software built to move onto without the drama: data migration during setup, a system you can set up yourself with help on hand, and a switch you make at your own pace. Explore the platform or request a demo.

Three Messages, Every Boat, Every Time: The Manual Overhead Automation Quietly Removes
There are a handful of messages that turn an average marina stay into one a boater remembers. Sending them to one customer is easy. Sending them to every single customer, personalised, conditional and on time, is a job no person can actually do consistently. That is exactly where the manual process overhead hides, and exactly what automated message streams take off your desk.
Services and Add-Ons: Where Marina Management Software Makes or Breaks the Guest Experience
A berth is the start of a visit, not the whole of it. This is a close look at how marina management software handles services and add-ons: the booking, the pricing, the communication, the internal jobs, the quotes, and why the depth of that handling quietly decides how a stay actually feels.
